The Stangeria eriopus project, established as a means to conserve this unique plant, was proposed by staff of the Durban Botanic Gardens in 2000. The project was officially launched in 2001 when funds were kindly donated by Richard and Judith Bressler of the Bressler Foundation, USA. Additional funding has also been sourced from the SABONET Threatened Plants Programme.
